VENOM

Image
This is a meter span flying wing designed for fast and aerobatic flying.. and it lives up to it The wing is hotwired out of high density EPS. The airfoil is PW51 at the root and PW51 at 120% thickness at the tip. There is no washout incorporated in the wing tip while cutting .. though there is a overall washout in the tip which we talk about latter The dimensions for foam cutting are It has one full length CF spar (4x1 mm) embedded on the top surface. The two halfs are but joined and the joint area has a 3 inch wide FG reinforcement. The motor mount is a ply and balsa embedded into the foam The elevons are 3 mm balsa. Cord 10mm near the root and 40mm at tip. This gives a natural washout at the tips The wing is covered with monokote .. (new technique) The pod top cover is made out  Electronics : 2 x 9 gm servos, 2207 2300kv motor (quad), 5x5x3 prop, 30A esc. I fly it on 3S Molicell Li-ion CG is at 190mm from LE apex She is FAAAAST .. very agile .. great flyer Flight video...

PELICAN - 3 meters - Build log

Image
This is a build log for a large plank flying wing. I named it "Pelican".. loosely based on the Pelican mentioned in nestofdragons The basic dimensions and calculations are as below..  The airfoil is phoenix The central section and each of the outer section are meter each. The outer sections have a dihedral.   It would has a central elevator and two outboard elevons/ailerons.. synchronized through TX mixing  The wings are hotwired out of EPS (closed cell polystyrene- thermocole) . It has a 1.25 inch top and bottom unidirectional carbon fiber cap spar and a 3 mm ply compression web across the whole wing. The whole wing is laminated one layer of 100 gsm fiber glass (unfortunately that was the lightest FG I could lay my hands on).. with the LE having a extra layer to form a Dbox The  wing is in 3 pieces (each of one meter), The outer panels are joined to the central portion by  rectangular aluminum bars and also locked with 4 x 3mm bolts   All t...

Plank flying wing 60"

Image
A "plank" flying wing  Details 1. Span 60" 2. Root Cord : 11.5", Tip Cord : 7.5" 3. Airfoil : PW 106 4. AUW : 605 g It is a "plank" flying wing, with very moderate taper. The wing is "hotwired" out of EPS a.k.a "thermocole". It has a 1.5 mm X 3.0 mm CF strips glued on the top and bottom surface of the wing to act as spar. The whole thing acts as a beam, and with the CF under tension becomes very stiff.. and is very light weight.  In the past I used to cover the foam with paper. This time, it has been covered with monokote, ironed-on. With some testing, the suitable temp was found which stuck & shrunk the film without damaging the foam. The wing covered with monokote, came out very good. The elevon is a constant cord elevon @ 10 % of wing area some pics The hot wired cores The reinforced roots with the joiner tubes. Had to use some polyurethane glue to harden the grooves, and fiber tape to reinforce the whole a...
