SU 35 with Thrust Vectoring

Image
Pictures and build highlights of a SU 35 The plan printed on a A4 paper. The whole design was based around a 9"  space for prop (mid mounted). With that as the base, the conversion ratio was 1cm on plan was 5.88 cm actual. The total span was 95.1 cm or 37" and the length was 114.6 cm or 45" The above dimensions were drawn on a scrap newspaper and templates cut out or traced directly on 5mm foamboard.  Note the Increased dimensions of the wing and tailplane.  few pictures of the construction The front fuse was made out of 5mm foamboard sides with a eps turtledeck The nose was shaped  out of  eps foam. Below is picture of the elevator mount. The elevator was full moving elevator. It hinges on a 3.5mm CF rotating on a 2.5" al tube. The CF was wrapped around with clear tape to mage a snug fit The wing had a leading edge droop which was reinforced with two chordwise stakes in each wing Note the beveling of th...

Xperimental - Forward Swept

Image
This is a forward swept design built in 2015.... l Wanted to explore characteristic of forward swept design for manoeuvrability The design flew marginally. though tip stalls were reduced, it had adverse yaw (probably which could have been due to the increased aileron  width at tips.. a constant cord ailerons might have reduced it). Also there was a lot of drag due to the lower part of the fuse Note the size of the control surfaces I quite liked the paint scheme Flying and being followed by a real Kite

Mig 15- tractor

Image
This is profile Mig 15 which I had built quite some time back Wing span 28". It is a tractor and has a profile fuse. The wings are KMF2. The  dimensions were based on the plan, but modified with increase in chord and tailplane area. She flies fast , and is quite responsive to controls. Because of the size orientation is difficult at a distance.

Plank flying wing 60"

Image
A "plank" flying wing  Details 1. Span 60" 2. Root Cord : 11.5", Tip Cord : 7.5" 3. Airfoil : PW 106 4. AUW : 605 g It is a "plank" flying wing, with very moderate taper. The wing is "hotwired" out of EPS a.k.a "thermocole". It has a 1.5 mm X 3.0 mm CF strips glued on the top and bottom surface of the wing to act as spar. The whole thing acts as a beam, and with the CF under tension becomes very stiff.. and is very light weight.  In the past I used to cover the foam with paper. This time, it has been covered with monokote, ironed-on. With some testing, the suitable temp was found which stuck & shrunk the film without damaging the foam. The wing covered with monokote, came out very good. The elevon is a constant cord elevon @ 10 % of wing area some pics The hot wired cores The reinforced roots with the joiner tubes. Had to use some polyurethane glue to harden the grooves, and fiber tape to reinforce the whole a...

Sukhoi SU 57 Simple semi-scale

Image
Here is a rc Sukhoi PAK 0 . The plane was built based on the plan view of the actual aircraft, suitably modified.. the leading edge sweep was reduced and the span was increased (compared to the scale). (the next build will have a better fuse, in any case the bty is housed inside the fuse and accessed by a hatch on the fuse top. The shape of the fuse needs to be changed, which I do in my next build The CG is located on the line joining the points the main wing LE start point Span 24 inches AWU - 250 gms Motor ; 2205. 2200KV, turning a 6X4 prop chopped to 4.5X4 She flies beautifully

SU 34 with Canards, Ailerons and Elevons

Image
This is SU 34 built with Canards, Ailerons and Elevons.. and leading edge droop (this was made some time back.. publishing it now) Span is 34".. it is made of depron All the 3 control surfaces .. the Canards, Ailerons and Elevons are controlled by 2 X 9 gms servos The connection of the servos and the control surfaces are  apparent in the photos.. i.e left servo, left horn to left aileron & left elevon.. and left servo right horn to right canard ...... and the opposite for the right side. Note .. the leading edge  has a droop of 25 degrees. This betters high alpha flight and also adds to the rigidity It has a 2826 / 2200 kv motor turning a 6X3.8 prop .. AUW is 465gms flies beautifully... . The canards add sharp responses both in pitch and roll.. it flips within itself, and can do so a couple of times in one go... .. high alpha flight is also very good, though yaw axis control is not there (it does not have moving rudder.. which I plan to add)... ...

Flying Wing 45" - Build log

Image
Hotwired foam Flying wing - 45" ~~ 114.5 cms Airfoil : MH64 Span : 114 Root Cord : 30.5 Tip Cord : 23.5 Twist : -1.7 degrees This is hot wired out of expanded polystyrene. It done in the single template method,  with one end of the wire anchored Tips had -1.5 degrees of twist Below is one of the cores after the cutting . it has come out very good . the template is still fixed to the core   the core without the template. Note the cord line the  calculations are Pictures of the finished wing Motor - 2230 1780KV ESC- 30 amps.. I do not have a lower rating ESC.. the max current draw on rig is 9.5 amps Prop - 6X3 AUW : 400 gms.. including 1000mah 3S bty -The wing has one 1mm X 3mm flat spar, running full lenght and one cross 3 mm joining spar -The motor mount is made out of coro and balsa - ailerons are balsa 1.75" - Wing is covered with tracing paper.. the paper is pasted with 50% white PVA glue thinned with 50% water. .. the p...
