Fast, hotliner design
These two are built for speed, and unlike a 3 surface (wing , tailplane and rudder) design, they are wings (delta). The thought was having the max wing area for a given wt and strength and with the least friction/profile drag, and of course ease of construction. (ignoring difference in Induced drag).
Construction is composite, foam, glass fibre, carbon fibre and vacuum bagged, resulting in a very strong lightweight structure for its wt. Airfoil is PW 51, with a 1.5 degree washout at the tips. Small wing tips are added to draw out the tip vortex. The LE is reinforced with CF. The wings tips and the centre section of the underbelly has some CF reinforcements built in. It has 2 layers CF tow of different lengths acting as spar. The paint pattern has been painted directly onto the skin and then vacuum bagged. The control surface hinges are live hinges built into the glass fibre skin. The servos and push-rods are embedded with the wing. All gaps (control surfaces and push rods are gap sealed to reduce drag. It has a 3D printed undercarriage with a monowheel and also 3D printed canopy, chin and cowl.
The green one.. aka "Angor-Rot" flies with 2212 2200kv motor and has two 9g servos (digital, MG), a 40A esc and flies on a 4S 3000mah Li-ion battery. AUW is 940gms . CG is at 16.5cm from LE. Wing loading at 15 oz/sq ft and cubic loading at 10.
She is very ..very fast and rock steady. With the bigger motor it will be much faster, and there is scope for the same as currently there is nearly 30gms of weight in the nose to balance it . I had to add air-brakes to slow it down while landing . It is a very rugged aircraft and even in a filed which is quite small and undulating /with rocks it handles hot landing very well. I am also happy with the finish, the 3D printed parts and paint and overall quality. This is a high quality aircraft.
The orange plane .. aka 'Hot-Rod" was the second of the two builds. Similar construction, but 5cm smaller span and much lighter .. AUW 650. The motor and servo setup is the same. This runs both on 3s 2200mah and 4s 1500mah. She is slightly easier to fly and lad due to less weight.
Both are a blast to fly .... faaast and agile... but you have to be on the ball.
Here is a video of one of the flights of Angor-Rot.. the speed becomes apparent when there are trees in the frame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzOfzjjEKLU
